Political Cartoons

There are many factors that effect us in the United States and some of those things are controversial cartoons. Look over these cartoons and discuss your opinions and feelings of one or more of them.

  1. Of course, I find these cartoons to be humorous. They're political cartoons and because of the irony that lies behind them starting from the first going to the last. In a way, these cartoons portray Americans as hypocritical in reference to our issues with immigration. We are a country of immigrants, however find it as our right and responsibility to keep other off "our" land (which of course we took from others).
I also feel frustration after taking a quick glimpse at these cartoons because once immigrants are "lured" into our country at promise of relative economic prosperity, they are turned an and basically put in a position that in almost every situation makes them the bad guy. Which to me is frustrating. Because of some of the negative circumstances that many of these immigrants are put in, in most cases with our country having a major or minor role in, they have to choose to come over here because the push and pull factors are predominantly pushing in this direction. I find it frustrating; I'm frustrated for the people who the cirsumstances are negatively affecting as well as frustrated at the fact that this is an issue that will take a lot of compromise that not many are willing to make.

  2. I agree with Sierra in that I find the cartoons humorous because they're ironic. The one that amuses me most is the first with the Native Americans asking the Pilgrims for green cards or visas. I think the Native Americans are often forgotten to be true Americans. For example, sometimes when people in the United States speak another language, people will say, "This is America. Speak English or get out!" or something to that effect. In my opinion, this really reveals their ignorance: first, America doesn't have an official language; second, the true language of America is the language of the Native Americans. If anyone can claim entitlement to America's land, to having been here longest, to speaking the language spoken here longest, it's Native Americans.

  3. They are funny but the first one just shows how much things have changed yet have stayed the same. Immigration is will always be a mess. Sierra is definitely right when saying that we are being hypocritical.

  4. These ladies brought up some important points, and I agree with them. (The cartoon of Uncle Sam constructing the border wall is pretty humorous..) But anyway, I feel like some people jump right away into saying they are "American" and that "this is our land", but people tend to forget how things came to be. The Native Americans are forgotten and others are the one's who "discovered America". I find the cartoon about Mr. Arizona interesting to say the least. Our world has changed from wanting workers to come to the US and offering opportunities, to trying to find those "that look Latino" (from the cartoon), and wanting all immigrants out! I can see why this law was placed into affect in Arizona, but at the same time, people are being judged by their appearance or lifestyle, people will always be looking over their shoulder. This will always be like this, and no one will ever be satisfied. I just feel like people should look into how this country was founded before they start judging immigration/immigrants. This is a country of immigrants.

  5. These cartoons are funny because they are true. There were no such things as immigration laws when America was first "discovered." And the Cartoon of Mr. Arizona just shows how the demand for cheap labor that illegal immigrants provide is crucial to keep their economy running.
